The Allegro Becomes Home To Recruits From Fort Knox
The Allegro at Helmwood
December 25, 2009 — Elizabethtown, KY — The Allegro at Helmwood teamed up with Fort Knox in the Home for the Holidays program that supports soldiers that are unable to go home during the holiday season. On Christmas Day, the Allegro community became home to a group of 15 recruits unable to see their families for the holidays. The Allegro staff volunteered their time on Christmas Day to make sure the recruits had a place to go to and feel at home. They enjoyed a home-cooked feast with the residents, family members of the residents, and employees of The Allegro.
"This is just our way of saying thank you and Merry Christmas," said Steve Sanford, Community Director of The Allegro. PFC Taho from Fresno, California was sitting at a table enjoying his meal and listening to stories from the residents that were World War II Veterans. "It's nice that they do this for us. The chow hall is alright, but this is, like, real food,” PFC Taho said. He further stated that coming to The Allegro was just like being with his grandparents.
The recruits then spent the afternoon enjoying cards, watching sports and visiting with residents and staff. The recruits also enjoyed playing the Wii and watching movies. They were provided the opportunity to phone family and friends since they were unable to be with them during the holidays. The day was spent making them feel at home and enjoying the warmth the Allegro brings to its community.
"We appreciate our military and what they're doing and what they stand for," Katrina Valliant Sales and Marketing Director of The Allegro said. "We wanted to show our respect and gratitude for what they do."
Before the recruits returned to Fort Knox they were given gift bags from the residents at The Allegro. “All of us here at the community enjoyed their visit and wish them the very best in their military careers,” said Steve Sanford, Community Director of The Allegro.
